First-generation head, Sakaida Kakiemon, was the first person in Japan to successfully master the technique of red overglaze enameling. This technique has been passed down by Kakiemon Kiln for 15 generations, establishing Kakiemon Kiln as one of the most prominent kilns in Arita.

 

One of the major characteristics of Kakiemon’s works is the unique milky white porcelain surface harmonizing with the red painting, known as “nigoshide”. “Kakiemon Style” is the distinct style of nigoshide on white porcelain vessels that have ample empty space, asymmetric compositions, and depictions of plants and animals in red.
This style became highly popular during the 1670s to the 1690s, particularly in Europe where many pieces were exported. The exported Kakiemon style influenced many kilns, including Meissen in Germany, which led to its rapid spread.

 

The nigoshide technique had once been lost, but was revived by the 12th and 13th Kakiemon generations. In 1971, the technique was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property. Today, the 15th-generation head leads a group of artisans to pass on the technique to the next generation. Additionally, the 14th-generation, Sakaida Kakiemon, was individually recognized as an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure).

 

初代の酒井田柿右衛門が日本で初めて赤絵（色絵）付けの技法に成功し、そこから15代にわたって受け継がれている有田を代表する窯元です。
柿右衛門の作品の大きな特徴の1つである赤絵と調和する独特の乳白色の磁肌は「濁手」と呼ばれています。また、余白をたっぷりとった濁手素地、非対称の構図、赤絵で動植物を描く独特の様式は「柿右衛門様式」と呼ばれ、特に1670年代から1690年代にかけて、ヨーロッパを中心に大流行し、数多く輸出されました。さらに、輸出された柿右衛門様式は、ドイツのマイセンをはじめとする多くの窯元で模倣され、その影響は広範囲に及びました。
一度途絶えた濁手の技法は、12代・13代の手で復元され、その技術は1971年に国の重要無形文化財の指定を受けています。現在は、15代がその技術集団を統率して次代へ引き継いでいます。また、14代酒井田柿右衛門氏は、個人としても重要無形文化財保持者（人間国宝）に認定されました。

1. Orientation

•     – You will be greeted by the manager at the Kakiemon Kiln gallery.
•     – You will be introduced to the Kakiemon style and the history of Kakiemon Kiln.
•     – Hear explanations about the panels on display in the gallery and the works of the current generation

 

2. Tour the Kakiemon Old Ceramics Reference Gallery

•     – Learn about the history of Arita-yaki through the exhibits
•     – Hear about the characteristics of the successive Kakiemon generations and the style of each period

 

3. Tour of the Kakiemon kiln and studio (non-public areas)

•     – See the wood-fired kiln and learn how it is used
•     – Tour the small workshop and learn about the wheel-throwing process
•     – Observe the painting process

 

4. Hospitality by the pottery master (non-public areas)

•     – Enjoy tea and sweets served in a building not normally open to the public
•     – Chat with the director while overlooking the garden
•     – If you’re lucky, you may be able to chat with the current head of the family (the 15th generation Kakiemon).

 

5. Visit the gallery / Purchase souvenirs

•     – After seeing the production process, you can admire the works in the gallery.
•     – Shop in the gallery (optional)

１. オリエンテーション

• 　●柿右衛門窯のギャラリーで支配人がお出迎え。
• 　●ギャラリーに展示されているパネルや当代の作品の説明を交えながら、柿右衛門様式や柿右衛門窯の歴史について学ぶ。

 

２. 柿右衛門古陶磁参考館の見学

• 　●展示品を用いて有田焼の歴史を説明
• 　●作品を鑑賞しながら年代による作風の説明や歴代柿右衛門の特徴を紹介する。

 

３. 柿右衛門窯・工房内見学（非公開エリア）

• 　●薪窯の鑑賞と窯の利用方法について説明
• 　●細工場にてろくろの制作過程を見学
• 　●絵付け師の技を見学

 

４. 窯元からのおもてなし（非公開エリア）

• 　●通常非公開エリアの建物でお茶とお菓子のおもてなし
• 　●庭園を眺めながら支配人との対話を楽しむ
• 　●運が良ければ当代（１５代柿右衛門）とお話できる可能性あり

 

５. ギャラリーの見学/手土産購入

• 　●制作工程を全て見学した後でギャラリーの作品を鑑賞
• 　●ギャラリーにてお買い物
