This kiln makes Arita-yaki using a rare technique called “neriage.” Neriage is a technique where different colored clays are combined to create a pattern where the design appears on both the front and back of the piece. Since the clay itself is colored, the designs possess a unique beauty and individuality distinct from that of painted pottery.

 

The three family members, Yuji and Namiko Kusaba and their son Akito, make pottery together, and each has their own neriage style. Yuji mainly creates repeating geometric patterns and works on large pieces such as vases. Namiko creates patterns such as floral designs using soft, pale colors. Eito’s works feature camouflage patterns and digital camouflage patterns.

 

The studio is equipped with an experience space where customers can make their own neriage works surrounded by the family’s warm hospitality.

 

有田焼では珍しい「練り上げ」という技法で器を作る窯元。「練り上げ」とは、数種類の異なる色の土を組み合わせて文様を生み出す技法で、生地の裏と表が同じ文様になっている。生地そのものに色が付いていて、有田焼で一般的な絵を描く表現方法とはまた違う雰囲気がある。

草場勇次氏、奈美子氏夫婦と、その息子の瑛人氏の家族で作陶をされており、3人とも「練り上げ」の熟達者である。しかし、それぞれ得意とする文様は違っている。勇次氏は幾何学文様の繰り返しを得意とし、花器等の大物も手がける。奈美子氏は花柄等の文様を柔らかく淡い色で作り上げる。また瑛人氏は、迷彩柄やデジタル迷彩柄といった2人とはまた違う独自の絵柄を生み出した。

工房には体験スタジオが併設されており、この家族3人の温かい雰囲気の中、お客様ご自身の練り上げ作品を作ることができる。

1. Orientation

•     – Enjoy Welcome tea and conversation with the pottery artisans
•     – Tour the gallery with the artisans
•     – Hear an explanation about the works exhibited in the gallery

 

2. SOUGAMA / Visit the workshop (non-public area)

•     – Visit the workshop to see the production process
•     – Hear a direct explanation by the potter about the characteristics of Neriage

 

3. Workshop to experience the neriage technique

•     – Create your own original work under the guidance of a master potter
•     *Shipping fee for finished products must be paid in cash on site.
•     – See how pieces are made using scrap materials (gifts for the participants)

 

4. Visit the gallery/purchase souvenirs

•     – After all the experiences, enjoy the gallery works
•     – Shop in the gallery (optional)

 

[Cancellation Fee Policy]

•     – If you cancel after the event has started or if you fail to attend without prior notice, a 100% cancellation fee will be charged.
•     – If you cancel on the day of the event, a 50% cancellation fee will be charged.
•     – If you cancel the day before the event, a 40% cancellation fee will be charged.
•     – If you cancel up to 7 days before the event, a 30% cancellation fee will be charged.
•     – If you cancel between the time of application and 10 days before the event, a cancellation fee of 20% will be charged.

２. SOUGAMA・工房内見学（非公開エリア）

• 　●工房内にて作品の製作過程を見学
• 　●練り上げの特徴を窯元から直接説明を受ける。

 

３. 練り上げ技法を体験するワークショップ

• 　●窯元の指導による練り上げ技法の体験ワークショップでオリジナルの作品を制作。
• 　※完成品の送料は、現地にて現金でお支払いください
• 　●端材を使用した作家による作品制作（参加者へプレゼント）

 

４. ギャラリーの見学/手土産購入

• 　●全ての体験の後でギャラリーの作品を鑑賞
• 　●ギャラリーにてお買い物
