The Sublime Beauty of Tsuji Seiji-sha: An Exclusive Private Kiln Tour of the Imperial Purveyor

Tsuji Seiji-sha, known as the first kiln to supply blue and white porcelain to the Imperial Court, was founded in 1668 by Kiuemon Tsuji III. The reason for the company to produce goods for the Imperial Court was that the vessels it supplied were praised by Emperor Reigen. Since then, for over 350 years, they have been trusted to produce items for the Imperial Household, and today they also produce handicrafts and tableware for general customers.
The products are characterized by the beautiful blue of the transparent, thin glaze. They are highly regarded not only as everyday items, but also as works of art suitable for ceremonies and special occasions.
In 1811, the eighth head of the family, Kiheiji, developed “Gokushin-yaki”, a secret production method of the Tsuji family for making vessels for the imperial court. In this technique, a box-shaped vessel (saya) is made of clay of the same quality as the finished product, sufficient glaze is applied to the areas in contact with the lid and to the entire interior surface, and the vessel is then fired to create a vacuum inside. This completely blocks the penetration and diffusion of gas inside, resulting in a product with a shiny, elegant finish and a deep, rich blue glaze.
The current head of the family is the 15th generation, Tsuji Hitachi, who works with his son Hiroki and the artisans in the production process.
