It is said that Genemon kiln was established more than 150 years ago. Since this time, the kiln has aimed to create pottery that combines the aesthetic beauty of ancient Imari ware with modern dining needs.

 

Skilled craftsmen, each an expert in their field, carry out every step of the production process—from hand throwing, wheel-throwing, underglaze painting, underglaze firing, overglaze painting, and overglaze firing—using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

 

The workshop, which has been in the same place since the kiln’s founding, has a rustic charm with earthen floors and pillars. The craftsmen still work facing outwards, as they did in the old days when there was no electricity.

 

A distinctive feature of Genemon Kiln’s manufacturing technique is the “dami” process of underglaze painting. In typical underglaze painting, the area inside the outlines is filled with a smooth, even layer of color. However, at Genemon kiln, they use a technique called “sodami” (outer shading), where they intentionally leave unevenness in the design to create a unique aesthetic. One of the most popular series utilizing this technique is the “Umeji-mon” (Plum Pattern), which has captured the hearts of many fans.

 

源右衛門窯が開窯されたのは、今から150年以上前だと言われています。
以来、古伊万里の様式美を踏まえつつ、現代の食卓に合う器作りを目指しています。
手作り、ろくろ、下絵付け、本窯、上絵付けから上絵窯にいたるすべての工程で、熟達した各分野の職人たちが昔ながらの手作業で製品作りに取り組んでいます。また開窯当初から同じ場所にある工房は、土間や柱に赴きがあり、電気がなかった昔の形をそのままに、職人たちは現在でも外を向いて仕事をしています。
製造の技法では、下絵付けの「濃（だ）み」という工程が特徴的です。一般的な下絵付けは、線描きの内側を「濃み」でムラがないように塗っていくのですが、源右衛門窯では、外側を塗る「外濃み」の技術で、しかも、あえてムラ（濃み跡）を残す独特のデザインを生み出しています。その技術を駆使した「梅地文」というシリーズは大人気で、多くのファンの心をつかんでいます。

1. Orientation

•     – President Kaneko will welcome you at the Genemon Kiln guest room.
•     – Enjoy tea and conversation with the kiln master
•     – Learn about the history of Genemon Kiln from President Kaneko

 

2. Tour of Genemon Kiln and Studio

•     – Tour the small workshop and hear about the production process, personally guided by President Kaneko
•     – Observe the artisans’ skills in a space that has remained unchanged for 170 years

 

3. Tour of the wood-fired kiln

•     – Hear explanations about the structure and use of the wood-fired kiln
•     – Learn about the differences between firing in a wood-fired kiln vs a gas kiln

 

4. Gen-emon Kiln Ko-Imari Museum (not open to the public)

•     – Visit the Ko-Imari Museum, which is normally closed to the public
•     – Learn about the history of Ko-Imari from President Kaneko

 

5. Visit the gallery / Shop for souvenirs

•     – After seeing the entire production process, enjoy seeing the works in the gallery
•     – Shop in the gallery (optional)

２. 源右衛門窯・工房内の視察

• 　●細工場に移動して金子社長が直接制作工程を説明
• 　●170年前から変わらない工房で職人の技術を見学

 

３. 薪窯の視察

• 　●薪窯の構造や使い方について説明
• 　●薪窯で焼き上げた作品とガス窯で焼き上げた作品の違いを説明

 

４. 源右衛門窯古伊万里資料館（非公開）

• 　●通常は公開していない古伊万里資料館の見学
• 　●金子社長の説明による古伊万里の歴史を学ぶ

 

５. ギャラリーの見学/手土産購入

• 　●制作工程を全て見学した後でギャラリーの作品を鑑賞
• 　●ギャラリーにてお買い物
