Elegant White Porcelain by Living National Treasure, Manji Inoue: The Beauty of Sculpted Pottery

White porcelain that does not rely on eye-catching decoration, but uses the beauty of its form to captivate. The master of this style is Manji Inoue, a Living National Treasure with 80 years of experience at the potter’s wheel.

Mr. Inoue has mastered wheel throwing, the most common technique for shaping Arita-yaki, creating white porcelain pieces that rely not on decoration but on forms that are elegant, dignified, and warm.
Even in his 90s, Mr. Inoue’s creative passion continues to drive the world of white porcelain, and he has mentored many disciples both domestically and internationally.

His grandson, Yuki Inoue, has followed the path of creativity, becoming an artist who brings new energy to the world of ceramics. While embracing the beauty of wheel-throwing techniques and white porcelain forms, he adds his own sense of humor and message through his unique expressions. Dishes decorated with the pattern of “fragile” stickers commonly used for shipping, and techniques of splashing glaze with a brush, are representative of Yuki’s style. Yuki has also collaborated with fashion brands and other industries which has contributed to the development of the Arita-yaki industry as a whole.
