Tsuji Seiji-sha is known as the first kiln to supply blue and white porcelain to the Imperial Court in Japan. The company became a purveyor to the Imperial Court starting from 1668 when vessels presented by Kiuemon Tsuji III. were praised by Emperor Reigen. For over 350 years, the kiln has continued to provide items for the Imperial Household. Today, Tsuji Seiji-sha also produces handicrafts and tableware for general customers.

 

Tsuji Seiji-sha’s pottery is characterized by a beautiful blue glaze, on an almost transparent, thin body. These pieces are highly regarded not only as everyday items but as works of art suitable for ceremonies and special occasions.

 

In 1811, the eighth head of the family, Kiheiji, developed “Gokushin-yaki”, a secret family production method for making vessels for the imperial court. Using this technique, a box-shaped container (saya) made of the same clay as the finished product is glazed around the lid and inside. Once the main piece is placed inside, both are fired in a way that a vacuum is formed inside. This process completely blocks the penetration and diffusion of gases inside, resulting in a piece with a refined, glossy surface and deep, rich blues.

 

The current 15th-generation head, Tsuji Hitachi, works with his son Hiroki and a team of artisans to create these exquisite pieces.

 

日本で最初に染付磁器を宮中に納めた禁裏御用窯元として知られている辻精磁社は、1668年に3代辻喜右衛門が納めた器が霊元天皇に賞賛されたことが、皇室向けの製品を製造するきっかけとなりました。それ以来、350年以上にわたって信頼のもとに宮中の注文を受ける一方、現在では、一般のお客様向けの美術工芸品や食器も制作しています。
製品の特徴は、透き通るように薄い素地に美しい呉須の青。品格があり、日常使いの品々だけでなく、儀礼や特別な場にふさわしい芸術品として高く評価されています。
また、1811年、八代当主喜平次が宮中用の器を製造するための辻家秘伝の製法である「極真焼」を開発しました。これは、製品と同質の陶土で匣鉢（さや）を作り、蓋との接触部分と内部全面に釉薬を十分に施して焼成することで匣鉢内を真空状態にする技法で、内側のガスの浸透・拡散を完全に遮断することで、気品溢れる肌の光沢と深い呉須の発色の製品が完成します。
当代当主は15代辻常陸氏で、息子の浩喜氏とともに、職人を率いてものづくりに取り組んでいます。

•     – Enjoy tea served by the potter (in the same kind of teacup served to the imperial family)
•     – Learn about the history of Tsuji Seiji-sha from Hiroki Tsuji

 

2. Tour of the Tsuji Seiji-sha studio (non-public area)

•     – The 16th generation master, Hiroki Tsuji, will personally explain the production process.
•     – Partake in a workshop about the structure of pottery
•     – Watch the craftsmen at work, drawing and painting right in front of you

 

3. Learn about Gokushin-yaki (non-public area)

•     – Hear the secret story behind the birth of Gokushin-yaki and the background of its revival
•     – Learn about the characteristics and production methods of Gokushin-yaki

 

4. View works presented to the Imperial Family (non-public area)

•     – Receive an explanation and view actual works that have been presented to the Imperial Family

 

5. Tour of the Gallery / Purchase Souvenirs

•     – After seeing the entire production process, you can view the works in the gallery.
•     – Shop for souvenirs (optional)

• 　●１６代辻浩喜さんが直接制作工程を説明
• 　●焼き物の構造を知る器割のワークショプ
• 　●目の前で職人のデッサンや絵付けの作業現場を見学

 

３. 極真焼について学ぶ（非公開エリア）

• 　●極真焼の誕生秘話や復活させた背景などを知る
• 　●極真焼の特徴や作り方について学ぶ

 

４. 皇室に納められる作品の鑑賞（非公開エリア）

• 　●皇室に献上されていた作品について実際の作品を鑑賞しながら説明を受ける

 

５. ギャラリーの見学/手土産購入

• 　●制作工程を全て見学した後でギャラリーの作品を鑑賞
